
After three years of research into the development, at a cost of 86 million euros, work on the line will finally start from next year, with the first phases set to map out a viable route by which the two cities can be better connected. It’s hoped that the project will be completed by 2023.
However, the head of the project, Jean-Michel Cherrier admitted that constructing a high-speed line through the Alpes-Maritimes could be problematic "The department is difficult geographically and we know already that a number of tunnels will have to be built into the landscape," he said. Cherrier then added that the new line would at least pass through the train station in Cannes, which he believes will relieve a number of the complexities.
